Military Assists Civil Authorities

Navy Assists Disaster ManagementSri Lanka Navy dispatched
three Navy ships Jaya Sagara, from Galle and Sayura and Nandimitra from Colombo in search of the fishing boats went missing from Southern, Western and South Western coastal belt, Navy Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said.

He said that the Navy received requests from the fishermen in Galle, Beruwala, Moratuwa, and Dehiwala seeking the Navy assistance to locate the fishing boats and fishermen went missing due to strong winds.

“Since small boats cannot be deployed for this purpose the Navy had to deploy these three ships for this operation,” he added.

In the meantime movement on the southern railway track came to a temporarily halt after several hundred residents of the coastline blocked the track near Dehiwala Railway Station moments ago demanding the rescue of four fishing boats that had been missing since last night.

The rail track had been blocked with fishing boats being dragged on to the track and had set up bonfires in several places.

Trains bound for Colombo and Galle are being held up as a result.

Also traffic along the Colombo – Kandy main road has also been hindered and transportation is taking place only up to Warakapola.
